I've had this idea for awhile....
Bad? Brilliant?

Basically, living in a big city with many visitors, why not use tourists as a way to spread environmental awareness?

Even something as simple as a flyer to hand out or post around the city could make a difference. People could go back to their little hometowns, newly enlightened, and spread that knowledge where we can't.

Unfortunately I'm loaded down with schoolwork and I don't have the time to put into that sort of thing, but maybe with some help....

just some minor problems...

I like your thinking... we can throw in a free energy effecient bulb for some people to... although many flyers will just end up being litter not to mention the trees destroyed to make the paper... not that I'm a tree hugger, just some arguments you may encounter

Word of mouth is the best method for spreading the word--and has the least negative impact on the environment.

For those who truly express interest in your message, you can give them a flyer printed on 100% recycled paper... won't necessarily get rid of the litter problem, but should minimize the impact while still getting the word out there!

Hmm...

Its definately true.

I live in Vegas, actually. Endless numbers of tourists here.

That's a good idea. I just wonder how I would be able to carry that out without wasting paper (as the other comment says).

What about it?
By Prakash, Apr 9, 2008 at 12:30:26 AM ET
.......... It sounds good, but how much effective would it be?
I live in Chitwan, a district of Nepal. Here are many visiting sites (particularly natural scenaries) to allure tourists (both domestic and foreigner). Definitely, the information given to them makes some differences as the matter perceived by crowd is disseminated to the hometowns related to the individual fellows of the crowd. But there are many households who just don't know how their petty household performances are wrecking havoc regarding global warming. I think, any activities should be just directed and started from the baseline. Won't it more effective than the former one? As we know the matter of alleviating global warning is a subject of welfare, it's perception by general public can only be expected when they are contented with their daily requirements. Moreover, change never appears at once magically, it's a spontaneous process and it starts right from the individuals- from us, from base! Let us give our hands.

If I understand your post, you are saying that many people will not act on global warming unless it affects them directly (that is, makes it harder for them to meet their basic daily needs). That is probably true, but the global climate crisis is a lot like cancer... by the time you feel its effects, irreversible damage has already been done!

Starting at home and in your local community is the best place to increase awareness of the problem. Going to the government with the message is probably the only way to get sweeping changes moving. The trick there is getting enough supporters behind you to stir government to action!

sounds good but....

i think instead of hading out flyers that will become litter we should have a little stand with posters and eco-friendly products while selling snacks....like re ussed napkins and eco-friendly water bottles we can also show eco-friendly light bulbs and other tips we can do...write tips on the napkins maybe....but i dont have the time either...

How about getting with your local parks management office and organizing a "tree planting party" where you can help reduce greenhouse gasses by planting more trees as well as hand out info on environmental conservation tips?

Making Time
By LORKAINEN, Apr 25, 2008 at 2:31:09 PM ET
It is a good thing that you have the awareness of our global crisis. That is the first crucial step. You shouldn't use school work as an excuse for not getting your message out... if this issue truly matters to you, you will find the time--even make the time to get your message out.

We must all take ACTION to get past global warming. It is a crisis that will not eliminate itself!

...well, not in our favor anyway.
