OK, this obviously bears more discussuion than I thought. Many of us, myself included, have a propensity for thinking that there is one great solution for all our problems. We must consider that its many smaller solutions that will save us. Now a poster recently had a comment about Chernobyl stating that it was the only meltdown on record (not true there has even been one in the US). I will grudgingly agree that nuclear incidents are few and far between but the cost is exponentially greater. However lets forget the potential for meltdown for a while, I do believe that it could be overcome. What I am on about is the waste. It has a (LOOKIT) 50,000 year HALF LIFE. Now lets look at where we are going to put it shall we? Why we BURY it.... that will solve the problem huh? (!)
Common sense (never common) says that if it didnt work for our garbage, if the enviromental impact is even on par with our landfills, we would be causing a greater problem than we solved. In fact there are several superfund sites just for the radioactive waste from these "solutions".
Now we need to ask ourselves is there something better...... Ok this may be contraversial but .... We havent looked at hydrogen as anything other than a means to power a car. I think we need to look at the universe's most plentyful element a little more seriously. Most power plants use steam heated by whatever means to turn a turbine and thereby produce power. Now there is a type of alge (yup slime) that can be induced to produce hydrogen as part of its natural respiration process. While photosynthisis is occuring it would eat CO2, while respirating it would produce fuel. The byproduct (dead slime) makes exellent feed for livestock. HMMMMMMMMMMM! Now would it work? I dont know I am not an engineer....but the theroy seems sound and its an avenue that has not been approached.
What about right now? Well i hate to say it but.... some of the new clean coal technology in the works is pretty impressive, wind and solar can take up plenty of slack (ineffecient, perhaps but non-polluting and free) Lets say we got just 10% of our..... you've heard this arguement. Geo-thermal energy has made Iceland 80% energy independant. Germany has a fantastic program that pays normal people to farm solar energy from the roofs of their houses (think on this if every new home built had a solar pannel on it.), if my state put a damn windmill on every mountian top they removed to get coal...... the list continues.... Its not going to be one big solution guys its going to be many little solutions...as in one solution for each of us and TOGETHER we Will solve it.
world without end,

The discussion about what these new source CAN be is not what we need right now or in ten years. We need to get to solving today's problems with the reality we live within NOW. That reality is nuclear power. Yes, there are other solutions, but they will only play smaller roles right now, and YES we should continue to invest in them. However, do not let anyone tell you they have ANYTHING which compares in the slightest to the safe and clean amounts of power that come from nuclear.
Save the fantasy of covering the planet in windmills and solar panels for countries like German and Great Britain. They will do the expensive "dirty work" or trying to force the square peg (wind/solar) into the round hole (energy consumption needs). Germany is resorting to coal as they stupidly shut down their coal plants and can't keep up with solar, and Great Britain is suffering from companies backing out of the deal to supply the first GW of wind power, when they say they want and need to make 33 GWs worth of wind power off their shores. Leave wind and solar to them. If they prove it can work, fine.
We are equally as dumb; burning food (corn) for fuel and burning natural gas for electricity when it should be burned in our trucking industry.
In the meantime nuclear will power our plug-in hybrids and 100% electric vehicles and so much more.
We CAN DO THIS!
A company in Utah that has made a big name for itself by putting its name on the sports arena... (sports are Big in Utah) and by telling us they don't produce nuclear waste ... they are the solution...
They want to bring nuclear waste from Italy for storage aprox. 80 miles from the biggest population center in Utah.
Nuclear is neither clean or sustainable if we consider the long term.
Not something our society has excelled in!
Buying what we are being sold.... Huge problem
Making choices with our dollars
(or by witholding them!) gives us power within the system.
Your arguments don't work anymore. Give it up. The nuclear industry has grown by leaps and bounds and your argument is stuck in 1979.
First of all the term "nuclear waste" is almost a lie because the fuel rods which come out of the core the first time still have about 95% of their good useable energy still in them. Once they are reprocessed, the amount of spent fuel left over is relatively TINY. Just ask the French. They store all of theirs in a small facility within their own country. Now, where else in all of known reality does anyone advocate the burying of any fuel which still has 95% of its energy left in it? Aren't you FOR recycling? Remember, we are talking about massive amounts of electricity from very small amounts of material to begin with.
Half Life? Do you even know what you're talking about? We're talking about tiny amounts of radio-isotopes which often get used in nuclear medicine to HELP CURE people of cancer. Yes, an even smaller amount is poisonous and cannot be used, and it can and is stored. The sad reality is that we have been storing much larger amounts of spent fuel because we have refused to do the smart thing like France, Japan and Great Britain do, REPROCESS IT!
We have had over 100 nuclear power plants in this country for decades and NOT A SINGLE person has EVER been killed from it. We have been storing our nuclear fuel after it's been through the reactors once on each power plant site, because people like you refuse to let us reprocess (recycle) it. This utter stupidity created the red herring, Yucca Mountain which is a grand waste of money we do NOT need to spend. We already reprocess the nuclear material from old Soviet nuclear weapons, and we put it back in our own reactors to keep YOUR appliances running and your lights on. Don't tell me we can't do the same thing with the fuel rods stored at our plants. This stuff is worth more money than gold, pound for pound! This is madness people!
Clean? Are you kidding me???? Nuclear energy is cleaner than any other source we have except maybe hydro-electric. We don't need to build roads and lay concrete all over our landscape to put up windmills which only give us power when the wind blows. We don't have to wait decades before solar, battery technology and geothermal actually make sense on a grand scale. Nuclear power SAVES the environment by NOT spewing out CO2 and other massive pollutants which coal fired plants emit. Bear in mind that Germany is trying to close down their nuclear plants, but since wind and solar don't give them what they need they still burn dirty coal and buy nuclear power from, you guessed it, FRANCE! Germany is one of the worst polluters in W. Europe, and France is the CLEANEST with 80%+ of their electricity from nuclear plants.
The cruel hoax which has been played on us all, is that no matter what people say, we are stuck building more and more coal burning plants to keep up. We even burn Nat. Gas to make electricity which is stupid too. Natural Gas must be used in our vehicles where it burns much cleaner and is a fine fuel for that purpose. Look at the major cities which use it in their bus fleets (Los Angeles, etc.). It works for heavy lifting, whereas ethanol does not. Besides, what sense does it make to burn food or cellulose (basically wood products) for fuel?
Sustainable? Are you kidding me??? If we need to, and we don't, we can get uranium from the earths crust and the ocean. It's all over planet. We can even use the abundant Thorium if we need to. But we DON'T. There are just over 100 uranium miners left in this entire country because of the fear mongerers who told us nuclear is unsafe and evil. So, we stopped mining it. Subterranean uranium is found in large amounts in the United States, in Canada, Australia and Russia. If we reprocess it instead of wasting it by shoving it underground at places like Yucca Mountain it becomes nearly endless in supply for our needs before we move on to more advanced sources. The claim that we will ever run out of nuclear fuel before we develop other sources of energy are a huge lie.
Here's the problem people like you must face. This is not about what we "want" as you mischaracterized it. This is about what we need and must do. This it about protecting our environment from dirty coal plant production (one built every 30 days in China and more in the U.S.). This is a travesty that has gone on long enough. We have had enough of listening to your fantasies of wind and solar which never amount to anything. You can keep dreaming about burning trash, tidal turbines and geothermal. I have nothing against any of it. Heck we can even keep subsidizing the research for all of it! But right now we need answers that work. Nuclear power is one of those answers we cannot live without, period.
Stop spreading lies. If France can do this using our own reprocessing technology for decades without a single accident or problems, then we can too!
